Receipts cannot be Recycled and they are Toxic

Most Receipts are not recyclable. Receipts have a toxic chemical that can be absorbed in the skin.

This is Why – The majority of retail receipts are made out of Thermal paper. Thermal paper is usually coated with BPA (bisphenol A) or BPS (Bisphenol S). Whether the coating is BPA or BPS it’s still not recyclable. The BPA additive was actually removed from hard plastic bottles due to creating a potential health risk. BPS is a similar toxic chemical.

What you can do instead – If there is an option to have the receipt emailed to you instead of printed, choose the virtual option. This will prevent the receipt from ending up in the landfill. You can also ask the cashier to not print you a receipt, but in most cases the cashier’s POS system automatically generates one without an option.
